Motorring 3 expansion to include fourth lane and noise reduction
Political parties supporting the 2035 Infrastructure Plan have agreed to expand Motorring 3, one of Denmark’s most heavily trafficked motorways, to include a fourth lane in each direction. To achieve this, the emergency lane will be converted into a regular driving lane on most of the motorway. For safety reasons, the speed limit will be reduced to 90 km/h.
In addition to the capacity expansion, 80 million DKK will be allocated for a full-scale trial of noise-reducing drainage asphalt. Studies by the Danish Road Directorate suggest that this asphalt could reduce noise levels by 3-4 dB for approximately 40 percent of homes along the studied section, potentially reducing the number of noise-impacted homes above 58 dB by about 26 percent.
The first stage, involving preparatory work and the installation of drainage asphalt, is scheduled to begin in 2027. The capacity expansion project is expected to be completed between 2029 and 2030.
