Danish motorway expansion projects

Overview

Denmark is undertaking several major motorway expansion projects involving capacity increases, noise reduction, and tunnel replacements.

Political parties supporting the 2035 Infrastructure Plan have agreed to expand Motorring 3 by converting the emergency lane into a regular driving lane to add a fourth lane in each direction. This project includes a 90 km/h speed limit for safety and an 80 million DKK trial of noise-reducing drainage asphalt, which could reduce noise levels for approximately 40 percent of nearby homes. Preparatory work is slated for 2027, with completion expected between 2029 and 2030.

Other infrastructure developments are facing logistical challenges and budget increases. Work on the Hillerød Motorway extension will require the closure of a section of Frederiksværksgade from late October 2026 until early 2028 to facilitate the replacement of a tunnel. Meanwhile, the expansion of the 9.5-kilometer road connecting the Holstebro and Central Jutland motorways is projected to exceed its original budget by 116.6 million DKK according to government budget proposals.
