Motosu cake shop fire investigated as suspected arson and murder

Police in Gifu Prefecture are investigating a suspected arson and murder following a fire at the Sunrise cake shop in Motosu on Saturday night. The incident occurred after the shop had closed for the day, while a group of 11 acquaintances were gathered at the premises.

Authorities reported that an emergency caller stated someone had been stabbed and gasoline had been sprayed before the fire started. Two bodies were recovered from the scene: a male victim who died from a stab wound to the abdomen, and a female victim who died from acute carbon monoxide poisoning.

A third victim, 70-year-old corporate executive Hiroshi Hayashi, was found in a semi-conscious state in a car in the shop's parking lot. Investigators believe Hayashi may have been involved in the incident. The fire destroyed approximately 300 square meters of the two-story mixed-use building. The Gifu prefectural police are currently examining the site and questioning those present.
