Motosu cake shop arson and murder investigation
Overview
On September 5, a fire destroyed a 300-square-meter mixed-use building containing the Sunrise cake shop in Motosu, Gifu Prefecture. The incident resulted in three deaths: a male victim who died from a stab wound, a female victim who died from carbon monoxide poisoning, and 70-year-old corporate executive Hiroshi Hayashi, who was found injured in a vehicle at the scene. Two other individuals, including the 66-year-old shop owner, sustained injuries.
Initial reports indicated that an emergency caller stated someone had been stabbed and gasoline had been sprayed before the fire began. However, subsequent investigations revealed that Hayashi may have been an uninvited guest at a gathering of the shop owner and nine of her middle school classmates. Police are now investigating whether Hayashi himself may have brought the gasoline to the scene. Authorities are currently searching Hayashi’s home in Mizuho City as part of the investigation into suspected murder and arson.
