Mount Bromo closed indefinitely due to spreading forest fires

Mount Bromo and the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) have been closed indefinitely due to rapidly spreading forest and land fires. The fires initially consumed the Watangan Valley savanna and Teletubbies Hill before spreading toward Jemplang in Malang Regency. Difficult terrain and strong winds have hindered firefighting efforts.

Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, Head of the TNBTS Balai Besar, stated the closure is necessary to support firefighting effectiveness and ensure visitor safety. While the main Bromo area is closed, Ranu Regulo remains accessible under specific regulations.

Visitors with tickets for the period of September 12–18, 2026, or until the area reopens, are eligible for a full refund or a free reschedule. Refund requests must be submitted by September 30, 2026, with processing taking 14 to 40 business days. Rescheduled visits are permitted from October 1 through December 31, 2026.
