Mount Bromo management faces calls for stricter fire SOPs and local reopening demands

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is urging the management of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) to tighten standard operating procedures (SOP) and regulations to prevent wildfires. To mitigate risks caused by human negligence—such as the use of flares for photography or improper disposal of cigarette butts—the Ministry is encouraging a daily visitor quota of 2,752 people and strict enforcement of sanctions for violators.

In response to recent closures, residents from eight buffer villages in the Tosari district of Pasuruan have staged a peaceful protest demanding the reopening of the Wonokitri entrance. Local community members argue that the blanket closure of the Bromo area is economically damaging and unfair. They are calling for a cluster-based or zone-based closure system that reflects actual fire risks on the ground, rather than a total shutdown, and are requesting an immediate safety assessment of the Tosari-Wonokitri-Penajakan route.
