Mount Bromo wildfires scorch 900 hectares and force tourist area closure

Wildfires in Indonesia have scorched approximately 900 hectares of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. Authorities have implemented a total closure of the Mount Bromo tourist area, which has been extended until August 15, 2026, to ensure visitor safety and allow firefighting teams to operate. Specific areas like Seruni Point have also been closed as flames approached tourist sites.

Firefighting efforts involve a joint task force of TNI, Polri, and local disaster management agencies using ground teams and water-bombing helicopters. While many hotspots have been contained, active fires remain in the Puncak 30 and Dingklik areas. Officials expect full containment by Friday.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Forestry is addressing rising wildfire risks in Riau, West Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan. Due to increased hotspots and smoke haze, the government is optimizing Weather Modification Operations (OMC) to induce rainfall. These regional fires are exacerbated by extreme dry conditions driven by the El Niño phenomenon.
