Mount Merapi releases 2 km pyroclastic flows

Mount Merapi released pyroclastic flows (Awan Panas Guguran) covering a distance of approximately 2 kilometers toward the southwest, specifically toward the upper reaches of the Kali Sat/Putih river, on Friday night, August 28, 2026, at 21:22 WIB.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (BPPTKG) recorded the event with a maximum seismogram amplitude of 87.74 mm and a duration of 116.97 seconds.

Mount Merapi remains at Level III (Alert) status, indicating high volcanic activity and an effusive eruption phase. Consistent magma supply is causing lava dome growth at the summit, which poses a risk of collapse and subsequent hot cloud avalanches. Authorities have advised residents to stay away from danger zones and riverbeds originating from the volcano, including the Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng, Putih, Woro, and Gendol rivers.
