Mount Merapi releases pyroclastic flows reaching 1.8 km

Mount Merapi released pyroclastic flows on the morning of Wednesday, August 12, 2026. According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (BPPTKG), the event occurred at 08:50 WIB with an estimated travel distance of 1,800 meters.

The material moved toward the southwest toward the headwaters of Kali Krasak and toward the south toward the headwaters of Kali Boyong. The BPPTKG reported a maximum amplitude of 49.58 mm and a duration of 82.61 seconds for the flow.

During the observation period from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB, seismic activity was dominated by collapse earthquakes and hybrid earthquakes. Specifically, 20 collapse earthquakes and 23 hybrid earthquakes were recorded. The Geological Agency has advised the public to stay away from danger zones and riverbeds originating from Mount Merapi.
