Mount Olympus joins UNESCO World Heritage List
Mount Olympus has officially been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed site, recognizing its unique combination of natural biodiversity and cultural significance. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that this inclusion is a moment of vindication for the mountain, which joins Meteora and Mount Athos as Greece's mixed heritage sites. To support the protection and sustainable development of the area, contracts totaling 13.2 million euros have been signed, including a 7 million euro program for the National Park's management.
In a separate address regarding cultural repatriation, Prime Minister Mitsotakis issued a firm message to the United Kingdom concerning the Parthenon Sculptures. He emphasized that Greece will not accept arrangements that imply foreign sovereignty over the sculptures or their return in the form of loans. He argued that the sculptures must be reunited with the Parthenon to restore the aesthetic and semantic integrity of the monument.
Additionally, Greece and Bulgaria have signed protocols for the mutual exchange of historical and anthropological materials, resulting in the return of 48 significant items to Greece, including sacred icons and crosses.
