Greek UNESCO World Heritage recognition efforts

Overview

Greece is advancing several initiatives to secure UNESCO World Heritage recognition for its cultural and natural sites.

Following the completion of restoration and protection projects at the ancient site of Nikopolis, the location was handed over to the local community. These efforts, funded by the Recovery Fund and NSRF, were intended to prepare the Roman and early Christian monuments for a UNESCO candidacy.

Mount Olympus has now been officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed heritage site, recognizing both its cultural significance and unique natural biodiversity. During a ceremony in Litochoro, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the inclusion as a ‘moment of vindication’ for the mountain, noting its role as a symbol where Greek mythology intersects with global history. With this designation, Greece now possesses three mixed UNESCO heritage sites, joining Meteora and Mount Athos.

To support the protection and sustainable development of the Mount Olympus area, contracts totaling 13.2 million euros have been signed, which includes a 7 million euro program dedicated to the management of the National Park. Following the recent inscriptions of Olympus, Zagori, and the Minoan Palaces, the government has identified the ancient city of Nikopolis as its next target for UNESCO recognition.
