Filo Jet shipwreck investigation reveals negligence and inadequate repairs

An investigation into the Filo Jet shipwreck, which occurred off the coast of Girne and resulted in 18 deaths, has revealed critical evidence of negligence. During a recent court hearing, authorities reported that several watertight doors, which should have been closed to prevent flooding, were left open during the voyage. Experts noted that closing these doors could have slowed the intake of water and increased the chances of passenger survival.

Technical reports presented to the court described previous repairs on the vessel as ‘superficial, insufficient, and unacceptable.’ Engineers warned that a crack in the ship's fiber structure could have progressed, severely compromising safety. Additionally, investigators are examining whether the captain was aware of improper repairs performed by the crew but failed to report them to company officials.

The ship's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) was recovered on September 25 and sent to Turkey for data extraction. The device, which contains approximately two months of audio data, including bridge conversations and radio communications, is currently undergoing detailed analysis. The court has extended the detention of nine suspects, including the captain and crew, for an additional seven days as the investigation continues.
