Mount Rinjani hiking trails closed due to forest fires

The Mount Rinjani National Park Agency (TNGR) has announced the indefinite closure of the Torean and Senaru hiking trails in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The closure is a response to ongoing forest fire management efforts in the Bukit Setampol and Sangkareang Peak areas of Mount Rinjani on Lombok island.

As of September 29, 2026, the affected area is estimated to reach approximately 1,098.75 hectares. While no new fire spots have been reported recently, officials are monitoring the situation via drones. The fires are described as surface fires fueled by mountain casuarina trees, shrubs, grasses, and dry leaf litter.

Hikers who have already purchased e-tickets for the Senaru route are advised to either reschedule their trips or switch their entry and exit points to the Sembalun route. Those currently on the mountain who intended to exit via Senaru or Torean are being directed to exit through Sembalun following instructions from park officials.
