Indonesian mountain forest fires and trail closures
Overview
Forest fires have impacted multiple mountainous regions in Indonesia, leading to the closure of hiking routes to ensure public safety.
On Mount Lawu, fires spread from Magetan Regency into Ngawi Regency. While hotspots in the Perhutani pine forest areas of Magetan were extinguished using manual methods like the ‘gepyok’ technique, the Cemoro Sewu hiking gate was closed indefinitely due to dry vegetation and wind conditions. Emergency efforts involved coordination between the police, military, Perhutani, and local disaster management agencies.
On Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara, fires affecting approximately 1,098.75 hectares in the Bukit Setampol and Sangkareang Peak areas led to the indefinite closure of the Torean and Senaru hiking trails. The fires were described as surface fires fueled by mountain casuarina trees, shrubs, grasses, and dry leaf litter. During the closure, hikers were advised to reschedule or use the Sembalun route.
Following fire suppression efforts completed by October 1, 2026, and subsequent safety assessments of terrain and infrastructure, the Senaru hiking trail officially reopened on October 3, 2026. With this reopening, five hiking paths in the Mount Rinjani National Park—Sembalun, Senaru, Tibanuh, Tetebatu, and Aik Berik—are now operating normally.
