Mount Semeru and Mount Merapi show increased volcanic activity

Volcanic activity in Indonesia has seen significant movement, with Mount Semeru and Mount Merapi both exhibiting high levels of activity.

Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang in East Java, experienced eruptions on Tuesday morning. One eruption at 05:29 WIB produced a volcanic ash column reaching approximately 900 meters above the peak, or 4,576 meters above sea level. The ash was described as thick and grey, moving toward the northeast. Due to its Level III (Siaga) status, authorities have tightened activity restrictions, prohibiting movement within a 13-kilometer radius of the peak in the southeast sector and a 500-meter buffer from riverbanks to mitigate risks from hot clouds and lahars.

Meanwhile, Mount Merapi remains at Level III (Siaga) status. Recent observations by the BPPTKG recorded high seismic activity, including 75 eruption earthquakes and 85 hybrid earthquakes. Lava flows were observed moving toward the southwest sectors of Kali Sat and Kali Putih, with maximum distances reaching 2,000 meters.

Weather conditions in the Yogyakarta and Jakarta regions remain largely cloudy, with temperatures in Yogyakarta reaching up to 34 degrees Celsius.
