Mount Semeru erupts seven times with ash columns reaching 1,000 meters

Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, experienced seven separate eruptions on Wednesday. The eruptions, which occurred throughout the morning, produced ash columns reaching heights of up to 1,000 meters above the peak.

The most recent eruption at 08:02 WIB recorded a maximum seismograph amplitude of 22 mm with a duration of 155 seconds. Ash clouds were observed to be white to grey in color, moving with thick intensity toward the northeast.

Mount Semeru is currently at Alert Level III (Siaga). Authorities have issued safety recommendations advising against any activity in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 km of the summit. Additionally, residents are warned to avoid areas within 500 meters of riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for hot clouds and lava flows extending up to 17 km from the peak. People are also advised to stay at least 5 km away from the crater to avoid the danger of volcanic rock projectiles.
