Indonesian volcanoes Semeru, Ile Lewotolok, and Merapi report increased activity

Multiple volcanoes in Indonesia have shown increased activity. Gunung Semeru in East Java erupted on September 6, 2026, with an ash column reaching 1,000 meters above the peak. The eruption, recorded with a maximum seismograph amplitude of 23 mm and lasting 102 seconds, has placed the volcano at Level III (Siaga) status. Authorities have prohibited activities within a 5 km radius of the peak and along the Besuk Kobokan sector up to 13 km from the summit due to risks of hot clouds and lava flows.

In East Nusa Tenggara, Gunung Ile Lewotolok experienced two eruptions on the morning of September 7, 2026, with ash columns reaching 600 meters. The volcano is currently at Level II (Waspada) status, and a 2 km exclusion zone is in effect.

Additionally, Gunung Merapi has recorded 14 lava flows toward the southwest, with a maximum distance of 2,000 meters. It remains at Level III (Siaga) status. The East Java Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has confirmed that logistics supplies for affected residents are secure and being monitored.
