Mount Semeru hikers evacuated as forest fires and eruptions occur

Approximately 170 hikers were safely evacuated from the Ranu Kumbolo camping area on Mount Semeru in East Java following a major forest fire. The hikers were escorted by registered guides and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) officials to Ranupani village.

The wildfire, which originated in the Ranu Kembang block, has spread to the Pangonan Cilik and Ayak-ayak areas. Due to the steep, rugged terrain and strong winds, firefighting teams—including police, military, and local volunteers—have been forced to use manual methods such as creating firebreaks and using tree branches to beat down flames. Authorities are also considering aerial water bombing to assist ground crews.

As a result of the blaze, all hiking trails on Mount Semeru have been closed indefinitely to ensure public safety and facilitate firefighting operations. Additionally, the volcano experienced an eruption on August 28, 2026, ejecting a volcanic ash column approximately 700 meters above the peak. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant regarding potential lava flows and volcanic activity.
