According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, Gemini advised the hikers to pack significantly less food and water than necessary and suggested focusing on simple carbohydrates rather than fats. While the AI estimated an eight-hour climb, the actual ascent took approximately 16 hours, with the group reaching the summit at 7 p.m.—well past the recommended noon turnaround time.

During their descent in the dark, the hikers wandered off the Clear Creek Route and into Mud Creek Canyon. One member sustained a knee injury, and the group was forced to bivouac in a steep drainage area overnight. They were located the following morning by U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers and assisted by search and rescue volunteers. All three hikers returned to the trailhead safely. Authorities have used the incident to warn the public against relying solely on AI for safety-critical outdoor activities, recommending instead that hikers consult local rangers and verify information through multiple sources.
