Mount Shasta hiker rescue involving AI planning

Overview

Three novice hikers from Roseville, California, were rescued from Mount Shasta after using Google’s Gemini AI to plan their ascent. The AI provided inaccurate guidance regarding route information, packing requirements, and time estimates. Specifically, the tool advised the group to pack insufficient food and water and estimated an eight-hour climb, whereas the actual ascent took approximately 16 hours, with the group reaching the summit at 7:00 PM.

During their descent in the dark, the group lost digital navigation after their phone batteries died and a backup charger failed. They wandered off the intended route and into Mud Creek Canyon, where one member sustained a knee injury. The group was forced to bivouac at an elevation of roughly 11,000 feet without adequate shelter, warm clothing, or supplies.

U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers and search and rescue volunteers located the group the following morning. While strong winds prevented two aerial evacuation attempts, the hikers eventually reached a base camp and returned to the trailhead safely. Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah Lario and other authorities have characterized the reliance on AI for trip planning as a “critical misstep,” advising the public to consult local rangers and use physical maps for safety-critical activities.
