Mount Shasta hikers rescued after relying on Google Gemini AI for trip planning

Three novice hikers from Roseville, California, required rescue from Mount Shasta after relying on Google Gemini AI to plan their expedition. The group used the AI tool for route information and packing advice, which led to critical errors.

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, Gemini advised the group to carry significantly less food and water than necessary for the trip. The hikers, who began their ascent at 3:00 a.m. on a Sunday, did not reach the summit until 7:00 p.m., far exceeding the recommended 12:00 p.m. turnaround time.

During their descent in the dark, the group lost their way on the Clear Creek route and entered the dangerous Mud Creek Canyon. One hiker sustained a knee injury, leaving the trio stranded overnight. They were located and rescued the following morning by U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers and local search and rescue volunteers. Authorities have warned against relying solely on AI for trip planning, advising hikers to consult local ranger stations for accurate, real-time information.
