Mount Sinai agrees to stop pediatric gender-affirming care
The Mount Sinai Health System has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to cease providing gender-affirming care to minors, including puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and gender-related surgeries. As part of the agreement, the hospital system will pay a monetary penalty and commit $2 million toward providing medical care for individuals seeking to detransition.
Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the Department of Justice is committed to holding medical providers accountable for practices that “endanger children through so-called gender-affirming care.” This settlement represents a significant action by the Trump administration in its efforts to restrict pediatric gender interventions and follows similar agreements involving Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Connecticut Children’s Hospital.
Critics, including David Kilmnick of the NY LGBT Network, have condemned the move, describing it as an abusive interference that uses the Department of Justice to “target transgender young people and intimidate healthcare institutions.”
