Mountain safety experts issue hiking precautions

Safety organizations are issuing warnings and guidance for hikers to prevent accidents in mountainous terrain.

The Austrian Alpine Club highlights the specific dangers of old snowfields during the spring season. Experts note that these surfaces are often hard-frozen and steep, creating significant slipping and falling risks. Even slopes with a 30-degree incline can be dangerous, as it becomes difficult to brake once a slip begins, potentially leading to falls into rocky terrain or steep drops.

In Carinthia, the Red Cross emphasizes the importance of preparedness and basic first aid skills. Red Cross President Martin Pirz advises that because professional mountain rescue may not arrive immediately, hikers must be able to provide initial assistance and stay with the affected person. Recommended preparations include choosing routes suited to physical condition, monitoring weather reports, and carrying essential gear such as sturdy footwear, first aid kits, sufficient water, and charged mobile devices.
