Mountain safety: Preparation is key for hikers in Krkonoše

Safety experts are emphasizing the importance of thorough preparation for mountain excursions, particularly in regions like the Krkonoše Mountains, where weather conditions can change rapidly and unpredictably. Eva Šulcová, director of the Krkonoše destination company, warns that wind on ridges can drop perceived temperatures by up to ten degrees and that fog can quickly obscure visibility and disrupt signals.

Essential safety recommendations include carrying extra clothing layers, rain gear, a headlamp, and a first aid kit regardless of the season. Hikers are advised to carry sufficient food, water, and cash, as card payments are not always possible in mountain huts. Additionally, travelers should study their routes in advance, prepare for potential closures, and ensure the difficulty of the trek is appropriate for the weakest member of the group.
