Mountain tourism rises amid increased safety warnings

Mountain tourism is seeing a significant rise, with the Club Alpino Italiano reporting an 80% increase in online refuge bookings during the first half of 2026. While domestic interest remains high, international bookings from countries including Germany, France, and the United States have grown by 10%.

As trekking popularity increases, safety experts are issuing warnings regarding physical risks and weather. Medical professionals note that unprepared hikers face higher risks of ankle sprains, knee pain, and lower back issues. Additionally, the Alpine Rescue service emphasizes the danger of lightning strikes, advising hikers to avoid ridges, peaks, and metal objects during storms.

Weather forecasts also indicate upcoming instability in Northern Italy and Tuscany due to Atlantic currents, potentially bringing intense thunderstorms and hail. Meanwhile, environmental changes remain visible in high-altitude areas, such as the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland, which is reportedly retreating by approximately 50 meters per year.
