Mountaineer Asma Mushtaq dies during Spantik descent
Pakistani mountaineer Dr. Asma Mushtaq has died following a medical emergency during her descent from Spantik, a 7,027-metre peak in the Karakoram range. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Mushtaq successfully reached the summit and was in stable condition at the top before the incident occurred.
The medical emergency took place at an altitude of approximately 6,400 metres. Despite immediate assistance from mountain guides Akbar Ali and Muhammad Amin, Mushtaq could not be saved. Officials noted that the guides provided every possible effort under extremely challenging high-altitude conditions.
Mushtaq, originally from Lahore, was a UK-based doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynaecology. She was also a prominent traveler and vlogger who documented her mountaineering achievements on social media. She was part of a five-member team of Pakistani women climbers who successfully reached the summit of Spantik.
