Death of mountaineer Asma Mushtaq on Spantik
Overview
Pakistani mountaineer and UK-based doctor Dr. Asma Mushtaq died following a “serious high-altitude medical emergency” during her descent from Spantik, a 7,027-metre peak in the Karakoram range. After successfully reaching the summit with a five-member team of Pakistani women, Mushtaq suffered the medical incident at an altitude of approximately 6,400 metres. Despite assistance from mountain guides, she could not be saved.
Recovery efforts for her body were initially hampered by severe weather, including strong winds and heavy snowfall, which forced high-altitude porters to retreat from near Camp 3 to Camp 2. The mission, coordinated by the Gilgit-Baltistan government, the Force Command Northern Areas, and the Alpine Club of Pakistan, eventually succeeded. Local climbers and rescue teams located her remains beyond Camp 3 and worked to transport them to base camp.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan has announced that an investigation into the circumstances of her death and the expedition company’s conduct will be conducted once the recovery is complete.
