Movimento per l’Autonomia strengthens influence in Sicily
The Movimento per l’Autonomia (Mpa) is strengthening its influence within the Sicilian political landscape through both local administrative changes and regional strategic alignments.
In Syracuse, a recent cabinet reshuffle has seen the Mpa increase its presence to three assessors following the appointment of Giovanna Porto. This move comes at the expense of the Francesco Italia Sindaco list, which lost member Andrea Buccheri. Porto replaces Daniela Palma Vasquez, who held portfolios including health, animal welfare, and consumer relations. The Mpa now represents the largest component of the majority with seven councilors.
On a regional level, the Mpa has signaled support for a potential second term for Governor Renato Schifani. Mpa leader Raffaele Lombardo expressed positive views of Schifani’s administration, stating that the governor has successfully revitalized Sicily. This endorsement aligns the Mpa with other center-right parties, such as Lega, Dc, and Udc, consolidating the coalition's position ahead of upcoming regional elections.
