Sicilian regional political coalition developments
Overview
Political activity in Sicily is increasingly focused on the potential second term of Regional President Renato Schifani. During the Etna Forum, members of the center-right coalition, including Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, and Lega, expressed support for his candidacy. Former governor Nello Musumeci indicated he would support Schifani despite ruling out a bid for himself.
Support for Schifani has since expanded to include the Movimento per l’Autonomia (Mpa). Mpa leader Raffaele Lombardo endorsed the administration, stating the governor has “successfully revitalized Sicily.” This endorsement aligns the Mpa with other center-right parties such as Lega, Dc, and Udc, strengthening the coalition ahead of upcoming regional elections.
Concurrently, the Mpa is increasing its local influence, notably in Syracuse, where a cabinet reshuffle has expanded its presence within the majority council.
