Moyale fighting kills at least nine and displaces thousands into Kenya

Clashes between Oromia and Somali regional forces in the Ethiopian border town of Moyale have resulted in at least nine deaths and numerous injuries. A hospital official reported that approximately 30 people were treated for wounds, many caused by heavy weapons. The violence reportedly began on October 21 following a dispute over the raising of a Somali regional flag in an area jointly administered by both regions.

The conflict has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, with thousands of Ethiopians fleeing into the neighboring Kenyan town of Moyale and Marsabit County. While Marsabit County Commissioner Stanley Kamande initially reported at least 2,500 displaced persons, subsequent estimates from local officials and the Kenya Red Cross suggest much higher numbers, with some reports citing between 10,000 and 35,000 people seeking refuge.

Displaced populations, consisting largely of women and children, are facing urgent needs for food, water, shelter, and sanitation. The Kenya Red Cross has launched emergency relief operations to provide essential supplies. Additionally, the insecurity has disrupted local trade and led to the closure of businesses along the border corridor.
