Mozambique announces $2 billion agricultural development plan

The Mozambican government has announced a two billion US dollar agricultural plan designed to boost productivity over the next four years. Minister of Planning and Development Salim Valá stated that the initiative will prioritize small-scale producers and promising value chains, specifically targeting irrigation schemes in the Lower Limpopo area of Gaza province.

The project aims to implement scientifically based farming through measures including agricultural extension, research, producer financing, and the provision of improved seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. It also encompasses agricultural mechanization and irrigation support.

This initiative comes amid discussions regarding the digital transformation of the sector. While agriculture supports 70 percent of Mozambique’s population, it currently contributes only 25 percent to the national economy.
