Mozambique announces new import rules and mining development goals
The Mozambican government has announced plans to implement new regulations for importing strategic goods by 2027. According to Secretary of State for Commerce António do Rosário Grispos, economic operators will be required to verify national market availability before receiving authorization for external purchases. This measure aims to prioritize domestic production, encourage industrialization, and reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves by ensuring imports only occur when local supply is insufficient.
In a separate development regarding resource management, the Governor of Nampula, Eduardo Abdula, has called for a shift in how the mining sector operates. Speaking at a national conference, Abdula argued that mineral extraction must move beyond simple exportation to become a driver for local economic development. He emphasized the need for structural investments, such as infrastructure and professional training for youth, rather than the current model of sporadic charitable aid, to ensure mining wealth improves the quality of life for local communities.
