Mozambique association reports 55 female murders since January

The Socio-Cultural Horizonte Azul (ASCHA) association in Mozambique has reported that at least 55 women were murdered between January and September 2026. In a survey conducted in partnership with UN Women, ASCHA director Dalila Macuácua stated that the organization believes the actual number of femicides is likely higher than the reported figures.

ASCHA is calling for the implementation of specific legislation to prevent violence against women, provide adequate responses to such violence, and establish legal mechanisms for punishment.

According to government data released in April, Mozambique recorded 40 female deaths out of 18,365 reported cases of gender-based violence in 2025. In response to these trends, the government is considering a revision of the Penal Code to introduce a specific law targeting femicide.
