Violence against women in Mozambique

Overview

The Socio-Cultural Horizonte Azul (ASCHA) association reported that at least 55 women were murdered in Mozambique between January and September 2026. ASCHA director Dalila Macuácua suggested that the actual number of femicides is likely higher than these reported figures.

In response to trends in gender-based violence, the government is considering a revision of the Penal Code to introduce a specific law targeting femicide. This follows 2025 government data which recorded 40 female deaths out of 18,365 reported cases of gender-based violence. ASCHA is calling for legislation to prevent violence against women, provide adequate responses, and establish legal mechanisms for punishment.
