Mozambique disaster agency provides food aid to flood-affected households

Mozambique’s National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) has distributed food assistance to 1,880 households in Maputo province that were affected by floods earlier this year. The aid, which includes rice, maize flour, sugar, beans, and cooking oil, was delivered to families in the districts of Namaacha, Moamba, Boane, and Matutuine to support their subsistence for one month.

In addition to direct aid, authorities are intensifying efforts to sensitize communities to relocate from high-risk disaster zones. Leovigildo Marcos of the INGD noted that convincing residents to abandon homes in flood-prone areas remains a challenge due to local resistance.

Currently, Mozambique faces a significant humanitarian challenge with approximately 662,000 internally displaced persons resulting from both natural disasters and armed conflicts. The INGD, in coordination with UN-Habitat, is advocating for concrete solutions and increased funding to ensure the safety and well-being of these displaced populations.
