Mozambique flood and infrastructure crisis

Overview

Severe flooding that began in late December 2025 across southern and central Mozambique has caused widespread humanitarian and infrastructural damage. The disaster affected over 724,000 people, destroying homes, health facilities, and approximately 275,000 hectares of farmland. This destruction has threatened food security for hundreds of thousands of people, prompting UN agencies to provide nutrition and water-sanitation assistance despite significant funding gaps.

In response to the damage, the government has shifted focus toward infrastructure rehabilitation and ongoing flood risks. The Minister of Transport and Logistics announced an emergency allocation of approximately 28.5 million euros for urgent road repairs in the Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane provinces to improve transitability before the next rainy season. Meanwhile, the National Directorate of Water Resources Management has issued moderate risk alerts for urban flooding and erosion in several southern cities due to persistent rainfall.
