Mozambique faces child protection risks due to global funding cuts

Mozambique is among the nations most impacted by global reductions in child protection funding, according to an analytical note by the Global Protection Cluster (GPC). The report highlights a decline in specialized personnel and essential services for vulnerable children.

A survey of humanitarian organizations across 22 operations—including Mozambique, Somalia, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Ukraine, and Afghanistan—revealed that 48.5% of participants reported impacts on child protection. Among those affected, 87% noted losses or reductions in frontline personnel, 84% reported a reduction in services, and 78% cited a loss of geographic coverage.

In Mozambique, the study recorded staff reductions in case management programs. While the report does not provide a Mozambique-specific analysis, it includes the country in a list of contexts experiencing losses in field staff, technical supervision, coordination, and specialized expertise. Mozambique has faced ongoing challenges since 2017 due to armed insurgency in Cabo Delgado, as well as displacement caused by cyclones and floods.
