Child protection challenges in Mozambique
Overview
Mozambique is facing significant challenges regarding the protection of vulnerable children, driven by both global funding trends and local environmental factors.
An analysis by the Global Protection Cluster indicated that Mozambique is among several nations experiencing a decline in child protection resources due to global funding cuts. This has resulted in a reduction of specialized personnel, technical supervision, and essential services for children in contexts already strained by insurgency and climate-related displacement.
In response to localized risks in the Gaza province, the Mozambican government and international partners have committed 67 million meticais to support approximately 16,000 children in the Mabalane, Chókwè, and Guijá districts. This investment targets risks such as school dropout, domestic violence, and early marriage, which have been exacerbated by poverty and recent flooding. The initiative aims to strengthen social protection, increase birth registration, and implement community awareness campaigns to mitigate violence and support victims.
