Mozambique addresses climate resilience, food security, and health risks

Mozambique is addressing multiple interconnected challenges related to climate change, food security, and public health. The country is participating in the preparation of the BREFOLE-ZRB programme, a regional initiative promoted by the Zambezi Watercourse Commission (ZAMCOM) and the African Development Bank. This programme aims to strengthen community resilience in the Zambezi River Basin through ecosystem protection and sustainable livelihoods.

Simultaneously, Mozambique faces significant food insecurity. Reports indicate approximately 3.5 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, with particularly severe conditions in Cabo Delgado and northern Nampula due to armed conflict and economic pressure.

On the health front, the Ministry of Health (MISAU) projects over six million cases of climate-sensitive diseases during the 2026/2027 rainy season. Malaria is expected to be the most prevalent, with over 4.5 million predicted cases. Other anticipated illnesses include cholera, diarrhea, and measles. In response, health authorities are implementing preventative measures such as distributing mosquito nets and conducting vaccination campaigns.

Additionally, the United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with Mozambique to protect and restore natural resources, focusing on coastal conservation and environmental training for youth.
