Mozambique Parliament approves gas revenue injection into 2026 budget

The Mozambique Assembly of the Republic has approved a revision to the 2026 State Budget, incorporating approximately 3.57 billion meticais (€47.4 million) in gas revenue carried over from the previous fiscal year. The funds, currently held in the transitional account of the country’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, are derived from Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) revenues.

Prime Minister Benvinda Levi and Finance Minister Carla Louveira stated that the additional resources will primarily fund public investment and infrastructure recovery. Key allocations include the rehabilitation of roads, bridges, and water systems damaged by extreme weather, as well as the reconstruction of schools, health facilities, and government infrastructure affected by recent floods and post-electoral conflicts. Specific projects mentioned include the Parliamentary Complex in Mocuba.

The budget revision passed with support from the Frelimo party but faced opposition from Podemos, Renamo, and the Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM). While the injection increases public expenditure capacity, opposition members raised concerns regarding spending priorities and the feasibility of executing these investments within the remaining fiscal period.
