Mozambique police arrest prison escapees and fraud suspects

Mozambican authorities have apprehended two fugitives from the Máxima Segurança (BO) high-security prison in Maputo. The individuals, who escaped during protests on December 25, 2024, were found in possession of two pistols and six rounds of ammunition. They are wanted for involvement in armed robberies and kidnappings.

In a separate criminal investigation in Chimoio, Manica province, police detained two Ghanaian nationals suspected of electronic fraud and criminal association. Authorities seized five POS machines, 49 bank cards belonging to foreign financial institutions, and four mobile phones. Investigators believe the suspects were using the equipment to transfer funds to their home country. Investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the suspected network.
