Mozambique sees major industrial and infrastructure investment drives

Cimentos de Moçambique is investing approximately $150 million to modernize and expand its production capacity at factories in Nacala, Dondo, and Matola. The investment focuses on rehabilitating and installing new kilns to boost national clinker production, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and conserve foreign currency. The Nacala unit recently completed a remodeling project featuring a new kiln capable of producing 3,000 tons of clinker per day. The expansion is also expected to generate significant employment, with the Nacala unit alone projected to create around 150 direct and indirect jobs.

Separately, the rehabilitation of the Moamba Major and Mapai dams in southern Mozambique requires an estimated $1.5 billion in investment. According to Edgar Chongo, Director-General of the Southern Regional Water Administration (ARA-Sul), funding for these large-scale infrastructure projects has not yet been secured. The Moamba Major project is estimated at $500 million and is viewed as a strategic asset to ensure long-term water supply for Greater Maputo and improve climate resilience. The Mapai dam project is estimated to cost approximately $1 billion. Studies to update the designs and costs of these projects are expected to be completed by early next year.
