Mozambique solar project: EDM and VBC announce €59.5M deal

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and private company VBC have entered a public-private partnership to construct a 45-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar plant in the Nhamatanda district of Sofala province. The project, estimated to cost approximately US$69 million (€59.5 million), will be located in the Lamego area across roughly 160 hectares.

The facility will include two 110 kV transmission lines spanning 11.9 kilometres to connect the plant to the Lamego Substation, integrating the power into the National Electricity Grid. The project is currently undergoing environmental licensing and public consultation. Due to potential impacts on agricultural land and cultural sites, a Resettlement Plan and Livelihood Restoration Plan are being developed for affected families.

This initiative is part of the ‘Energia para Todos’ (Energy for All) programme, coordinated by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, which aims to achieve universal electricity access in Mozambique by 2030.
