Mozambique targets Gaza Province for agro-business and investment growth
The Mozambican government has announced plans to rehabilitate the Limpopo and Chókwè irrigation systems in Gaza Province to bolster water management and transition infrastructure into agro-business production platforms. This initiative follows significant damage caused by floods between January and March.
Delfim Vilissa, director of the National Irrigation Institute (INIR), stated that efforts are underway to repair critical damage to make 15,000 hectares operational. Currently, 8,000 hectares in Chókwè and 7,000 hectares in Lower Limpopo are being prepared for use. The goal is to restore production by the 2026/2027 agricultural campaign.
In a broader economic move, the government aims to position Gaza as a new investment frontier in Southern Africa, focusing on agriculture, agro-industry, tourism, and logistics. Finance Minister Carla Louveira highlighted the Limpopo Valley's irrigation systems as key assets. To attract investors, the government plans to digitalize the Single Service Desk, implement tacit approval for licensing, and create a Single Land Window to accelerate land use rights for strategic projects.
