Mozambique targets international drug trafficking networks

Mozambican authorities have identified the presence of several international drug trafficking networks operating within the country. Ilídio Miguel, Director-General of the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), reported during a national conference that these groups include two Mexican cartels—Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation—a Pakistani organization, and the Brazilian criminal group Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC).

Officials expressed significant concern regarding the ability of these networks to penetrate state institutions through corruption to facilitate their operations. The Pakistani network, which was active in the 1990s, has seen a resurgence since 2019. The PCC's presence was previously highlighted by the 2020 arrest of Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, known as ‘Fuminho’, in Maputo.

In response to these threats, President Daniel Chapo announced an intensification of efforts to combat drug trafficking, sale, and consumption. The President emphasized the need to strengthen the intervention capabilities of the Public Prosecutor's Office, courts, defense and security forces, Sernic, and the Mozambique Republic Police. He specifically highlighted the urgent need to protect schools and children from the influence of drug networks, labeling the protection of minors a ‘sacred duty’ of the state.
