Drug trafficking and manufacturing in Mozambique
Overview
Mozambican authorities have identified the presence of several international drug trafficking networks operating within the country. Ilídio Miguel, Director-General of the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), reported that these groups include two Mexican cartels—Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation—a Pakistani organization, and the Brazilian criminal group Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC). Officials expressed concern regarding the ability of these networks to penetrate state institutions through corruption.
In response, President Daniel Chapo announced an intensification of efforts to combat trafficking, sale, and consumption, emphasizing the need to strengthen the capabilities of the Public Prosecutor's Office, courts, and security forces. He specifically highlighted the protection of minors as a ‘sacred duty’ of the state.
Following these warnings, law enforcement agencies in Maputo dismantled an illegal drug manufacturing facility located in a residential property in the Magoanine B neighborhood. The operation, involving SERNIC and the Mozambique Republic Police (PRM), resulted in the seizure of chemicals and processing equipment. A 40-year-old man was detained, and investigators are looking into the potential involvement of other individuals, including two Nigerian nationals. This crackdown follows reports from the Ministry of Health noting a 58% increase in patients treated for mental and behavioral disorders related to psychoactive substance consumption compared to the previous year.
