Mozambique updates climate strategy through 2035 with AfDB support

Mozambique has initiated the validation process for its updated National Strategy for Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change (ENAMMC), a framework designed to guide the country’s response to climate risks through 2035. Supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), a five-day technical workshop began on 14 September to review the strategy, its action plan, and resource mobilization efforts.

The updated strategy aims to strengthen national resilience against cyclones, flooding, droughts, coastal erosion, and rising sea levels. Once approved, the ENAMMC will establish specific targets, indicators, and institutional responsibilities across various sectors. Key focus areas include improving food security, water access, resilient infrastructure, and protecting livelihoods.

In addition to adaptation, the strategy incorporates mitigation measures to support low-carbon development. These include initiatives for clean energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable forest management. Sónia Muando, Mozambique’s National Director of Environment and Climate Change, emphasized that climate change is an immediate reality requiring increased investment in prevention, early-warning systems, and spatial planning.
