Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP sector focuses on innovation
At the World Buffalo Congress in Sorrento, industry leaders discussed the future of the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP supply chain. Domenico Raimondo, president of the Consorzio di Tutela, noted that the sector generates between 1.2 and 1.3 billion euros in turnover, representing approximately 14% of Campania's GDP.
Experts emphasized that digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and robotics are essential tools to address economic and environmental sustainability, regulatory pressures, and bureaucracy. While technology like genomics and sensor-based automation can improve animal welfare and product quality, leaders stressed that these advancements must complement, rather than replace, traditional production methods and artisanal know-how.
To expand into distant international markets such as the United States and Japan, the sector aims to use technology to overcome logistical challenges and shelf-life limitations. Additionally, the consortium is utilizing artificial intelligence to combat product imitations and protect the brand's authenticity across Europe and overseas.
