Mato Grosso authorities address prison failures, school neglect, and environmental protection
The Mato Grosso judiciary and Public Ministry (MPMT) are addressing several systemic issues across the state. In Juína, the State was found liable for failing to provide adequate prison facilities for semi-open and open regimes, as well as failing to control illicit communications within the prison system that have been linked to ordered homicides. The court has ordered the State to present a structured prevention plan within 120 days.
In Primavera do Leste, a mother was taken to police custody after the MPMT discovered three of her children were not attending school, leading to investigations into intellectual abandonment. Meanwhile, in Cuiabá, authorities are conducting inspections to clear public walkways of abandoned vehicles, and a technical task force is set to verify 517 potential water springs to improve environmental licensing accuracy.
To improve institutional efficiency, the MPMT is conducting various training programs for civil servants, focusing on the New Bidding and Contracts Law and advanced investigative techniques. Additionally, the Federal Police has launched the ‘Sentinela da Democracia’ channel in Mato Grosso to receive reports on electoral crimes ahead of the 2026 elections. Due to building maintenance, in-person services at the MPMT headquarters in Cuiabá will be partially suspended starting September 21.
