Rio de Janeiro implements new strategies to combat organized crime
Rio de Janeiro is implementing several initiatives to combat organized crime and improve public security. The municipal government has signed agreements with companies such as Light, 99, and Gabriel to utilize private data and surveillance networks to assist in criminal investigations, including tracking suspicious vehicles and combating cable theft.
At the judicial level, the Prosecutor General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, has approved a plan for the police to reoccupy territories in communities currently controlled by criminal groups and militias. This plan, part of the 'ADPF das Favelas' framework, includes pilot projects in areas like Rio das Pedras and Muzema, aiming to integrate security forces with social services and human rights monitoring.
Simultaneously, law enforcement is addressing crime within the prison system. Authorities have reported seizures of prohibited items, including satellite internet equipment and narcotics, in various penitentiaries. Additionally, reports indicate that approximately 220 inmates failed to return to prison following a temporary release period granted for Father's Day, leading to their classification as fugitives.
